Institution
This film company that the film is made under, all of the people who work on that particular film work for the film company, People like the sound editors and cameramen and costume designers. This can influence the success of a film as some people may only go to see films made by a certain film company, examples of this could be companies like StudioCanal. This company made films such as most of the Carry on films, but it’s mostly known for Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Another example could be New Line Cinema it mostly horror films like Nightmare on Elm Street and Final Destination.
Technology
In the last 10-15 years the technology available for use in film has grew proportionality, recent advances: such as better CGI, HD, and Blu Ray and IMAX have allowed the directors to make the film more desirable to see in the cinema. However now that we can get HD and 3D TV in the home, some people think that there is no point in going to the cinema to see it when you see it on DVD. Other advances in the film making such as stop motion or animation films are easier to make than live production.  With the quality of production and picture levels improving some think that cinema and picture houses will soon become extinct

Social, political and cultural
The social side of film can show the behaviour of a group of individuals react to a situation, such as the Asian community in the British society in Yasmin. After 9/11 the all Pakistani group all looked upon as all being a terrorist.
The political deals with in a country maybe the film pays homage to a great prime minster/ president. An example of this would be the film The Iron Lady with Meryl Streep, this deal with the reign of Margret Thatcher in Britain government.
Cultural deals with the culture of a certain country like the film four lions, it does have a comic element to the act of terrorism, it deal with the culture of extremist Pakistani residents and their beliefs in their culture.
Gender issues
This deal with the thought that one sex is better than the other or that a certain profession is gender specific, a good example of this is Bend it like Beckham. A young girl is trying to make into professional football, when it is predominantly Male football
Ethnicity
Is the state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition, examples could include early Indiana jones films, white explorer hero over exotic  Arab characters, while Arab American and other spectators in the United States rarely saw commercial releases of films by Arab filmmakers such as the Egyptian director Youssef Chahine.

Auteur Example

Zack Snyder
Did films such as
·         300
·         Watchmen
·         Sucker punch
·         Dawn of the dead
This auteur has a constant theme of violence in his films. In 300 you see the bloody battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. where the Spartan fought the Persians at the hot gates. In all other of the film he has produced they have been centred on violence. Watchmen and Dawn of the Dead were both very violent films one is on superheroes who are hated by society and the other is a zombie film.

Star/performer area
Here I will look at the actor in a range of different ways. Is that actor used in a specific genre (Clint Eastwood – westerns)? Does that actor have a certain way of performing? Does that actor always work with the same director? These are some of the question I would look at. It will be the performer on screen focused on
Genre
There are many main forms of genre then there are subgenres. These are broken down into 11 different types of genre:
·         Action - Stories whose central struggle plays out mainly through a clash of physical forces.
·         Adventure - Stories whose central struggle plays out mainly through encounters with new "worlds."
·         Comedy
·         Crime - Stories whose central struggle is about catching a criminal
·         Drama
·         Epics - Stories whose central struggle plays out in the midst of a clash of great forces or in the sweep of great historical change.
·         Horror -killing something in human
·         Musicals – singing and dancing
·         Sci-fi - Stories whose central struggle is generated from the technology and tools of a scientifically imaginable world.
·         Western
·         Wars – centred around showing what a war was like
Auteur - A filmmaker who influences their movies so much that they rank as their author.
The auteur's creative voice is distinct enough to shine through all kinds of studio interference and through the collective process; this could make a good director. If the involvement of the director is unclear, it may mean a poor film. The creator of the auteur Francois Truffaut said a quote:
“There are no good and bad movies, only good and bad directors.”

Focus of FM3

For FM3 I will need to carry out a small sclae reaserch project. This is designed to devlop my research skills. It will be based on one focus film with appropriate reference to at least two other films. I will establish an area of investiagtion from the chosen film to one of the following frameworks.
  • Star/ performer
  • Genre
  • Auteur
  • Soical/ politcal/ cultrual  studies
  • Gender issuses
  • Ethnicity
  • Institution
  • Technnology
